Choosing a Water Safety Swim Program
Every child deserves the opportunity to develop water safety skills, and finding the right program for your child and family is an important decision.
There are many different swim lessons, swim schools, instructors, and water safety programs available. They are not all the same, and there is no one program that is the right fit for every child. The most important thing is finding an instructor or program that aligns with your child’s needs, your family’s goals, and your expectations for water safety.
What to Consider When Choosing a Program
When considering a water safety or swim program, I encourage parents to look beyond simply asking, “Will my child learn to swim?”
Look for an instructor who demonstrates patience, knowledge, professionalism, a genuine understanding of water safety and clear communication. Before choosing a program, don't be afraid to ask questions. A good instructor should welcome them. A quality program should also be able to explain what your child is working toward and what skills are appropriate for their current age and ability.
Consider asking:
-
What water safety and or swim skills do you teach?
-
What age groups and abilities do you work with?
-
How are lessons structured?
-
How long are lessons and how frequently are they offered?
-
How do you approach a child who is fearful or hesitant in the water?
-
How do you communicate your child's progress?
-
What role do parents play during, between and after lessons?
-
What should I expect my child to be able to do by the end of the program?
-
How can we continue practicing and strengthening these skills?
Most importantly, remember no swimming skill can make a child drown-proof, and that swim skills are one layer of water safety—not a replacement for the other layers. Adult supervision, barriers, CPR readiness, and water safety education all play an important role. The strongest approach is to build multiple layers of water safety around your family.

A Note from Miss Julie
My goal has always been bigger than teaching swim lessons. It is to help families understand water safety and make informed decisions that can ultimately help protect children.
If my schedule is full, your family's needs fall outside of the type of instruction I provide, or my program simply isn't the right fit for you, I still want you to have the information you need to make a thoughtful decision.
I encourage you to ask questions, learn about the programs available in your area, and choose an instructor who you feel confident entrusting with your child.
And wherever your child learns, remember that swim skills are just one layer of water safety.
Hope is not a plan. Layers are. And layers save lives.
